Client Work ★ 2024-2025Enabling a more user-centered approach throughout the system acquisition lifecycle
Overview
Role: Human Factors Research
Summary: Develop strategies for incorporating user experience into a government program’s existing engineering and software acquisition documentation
Services: Human Systems Integration
Human Factors Engineering
Timeline: Advised client and sponsors over 1 year
Existing engineering and software acquisition documentation lacked structured methods for incorporating user experience and human factors engineering considerations, resulting in inconsistent integration of usability requirements across program phases. This gap made it difficult to ensure user needs were captured and included in acquisition decisions, increasing the risk of deploying systems that were misaligned with operational workflows and end-user performance product ordering needs.Problem
Developed a set of human factors engineering and user experience integration strategies to embed usability and Section 508 accessibility requirements into existing engineering and software acquisition documentation. The approach standardized how user needs, accessibility criteria, and evaluation methods were defined and traced across acquisition artifacts, enabling more consistent consideration of experience and compliance requirements throughout the system lifecycle.Solution
Established a structured framework for integrating human factors engineering, user experience, and Section 508 accessibility requirements into engineering and software acquisition documentation. The deliverable improved consistency in tracing usability and accessibility criteria across acquisition artifacts, enabling more informed design and procurement decisions that better aligned GOTS and COTS systems with user needs and compliance standards.Result
